Description

The Victorinox Mechanic is a 91mm (3.5-inch) retired 3-layer Swiss Army Knife, introduced around 1991 and discontinued around 2017. It is widely recognized as one of the slimmest 91mm models to feature pliers, blending the functionality of a Tinker model with specialized gripping tools. It is often regarded as a classic for everyday carry (EDC).

Key Features and Tools

Pliers: Small, versatile pliers with a wire cutter, offering a unique capability in a slim, 3-layer format.

Main Blades: Large main blade and a smaller pen blade.

Screwdrivers: Features a Phillips screwdriver (often the early 3D style, sometimes with a “can key” slot) on the back layer.

Openers: Can opener with a small screwdriver (tip) and a cap lifter (bottle opener) with a wire stripper/bender.

Standard Tools: Reamer/punch with a sewing eye, toothpick, tweezers, and key ring.

Dimensions: Roughly 91mm long, 18mm thick, and 3.5 ounces.

Contextual Details

Replacement: The Deluxe Tinker is often considered the closest modern successor, though it is thicker and includes scissors.

Distinguishing Feature: Unlike many similar, newer tools, the original Mechanic pliers generally do not have wire crimps, and the knife often features a “3D” back-side Phillips head.

Collector Status: It is often regarded as a functional “tool” rather than a “weapon,” often sought after by collectors for its slim profile.
