Description
A Segerstrom Eskilstuna barrel knife is a vintage Swedish folding knife, known for its distinctive barrel-shaped handle typically made of curly birch wood, with steel mounts, and a single-edge steel blade that folds out, often locking via a pin, used for whittling (sloyd) or as a general-purpose tool, featuring markings like “SEGERSTROM ESKILSTUNA SWEDEN” on its brass or steel frame. These antique knives were popular for export, varying in size and sometimes featuring rare corkscrews, showcasing craftsmanship from the late 19th to early 20th century.
Key Characteristics:
Handle: Barrel-shaped, often curly birch (burl wood), sometimes other materials like ebony or walnut, with steel or brass fittings.
Blade: Single-edge, steel, usually a clip-point, that folds into the handle.
Mechanism: Features a pin-lock system, allowing the blade to be secured open or closed; sometimes referred to as a “patent knife” or “sloyd knife”.
Markings: Stamped “SEGERSTROM ESKILSTUNA SWEDEN” on the metal frame.
Age: Produced by the Segerstrom company (active ~1864-1925), making them late 19th to early 20th-century antiques.
