Leatherman Wave®+ Multitool | Leatherman
The 2003 Original Leatherman Wave is a 4-inch (10cm) stainless steel multi-tool, renowned for introducing one-handed, outside-accessible locking blades to the lineup. Known as the first generation (Gen 1), this 240g tool features 13+ tools, including outside-accessible saw, file, and two blades, with inner tools that generally do not lock, setting it apart from the 2004 redesign.
Key Features and Details (2003/Gen 1 Era):
Design: Featured a folded sheet metal design for comfort but was prone to the “Leatherman pinch”.
External Locking Tools: The main blade, serrated blade, saw, and diamond-coated file could be opened with one hand and featured liner locks.
Internal Tools: The interior contained pliers (with a thinner, long-nose tip compared to later models), wire cutters, screwdrivers, scissors, and a bottle/can opener.
Unique Characteristics: The 2003 model often featured a flat, non-removable lanyard ring and lacked the ruler markings found on the later, more robust “Wave+” versions.
Screwdriver System: Used a proprietary flat-sided bit driver for the small screwdriver, rather than the universal bit exchanger on modern models.
Legacy: Produced from roughly 1998 to 2004, this version is widely regarded as a classic EDC (Everyday Carry) tool and is highly sought after by collectors.
It was replaced by the significantly redesigned second-generation Wave in 2004, which introduced more robust locks for internal tools and a slightly thicker, heavier frame.
