Description
A Joh. Engstrom barrel knife from Eskilstuna, Sweden, is a unique antique folding knife with a hollow, barrel-shaped wooden handle (often curly birch) containing a concealed, spring-loaded steel blade that locks into place for use, known for its ingenious “drawer-opening” mechanism and markings like “JE 1874” with an arrow, popular as fishing/whittling knives and often called emigrant or art knives.
Key Features:
- Handle: Hollow, barrel-shaped, usually made of figured Curly Birch wood with steel end caps.
- Blade: A single, high-carbon steel blade that folds inside the barrel handle.
- Mechanism: A ribbed lever at the butt of the handle releases the blade, which slides out, opens, and then pushes back into the handle to lock.
- Markings: Typically stamped “JOH ENGSTROM ESKILSTUNA SWEDEN” and often features “J E 1874” with an arrow, indicating the design’s origin.
- Origin: Made by the Engström company in Eskilstuna, Sweden, active in the late 19th/early 20th century.
- Names: Also known as “Cod Fisherman’s Knife,” “emigrant knife,” “art knife” (konstkniv), or “clicking knife” (kneppekniv).
